Summer Fun: The Top Community Events Throughout Alaska in August

The sun is shining, the outdoors are calling, and school is right around the corner. The clock is ticking, so be sure to make the most of every minute of summer with these top events happening in August.


Summer Events

12th Annual Blueberry Festival

When: August 17th – 18th, 2019
Where: Alyeska Resort (1000 Arlberg Ave, Girdwood, AK)
Cost: Free, $5 entry fee for pie-eating contest

Celebrate the blueberry season with a fun-filled outdoors festival. With delicious blueberry treats, berry picking, free live music, arts and crafts booths, hiking, and a beer garden-- the Blueberry Festival is full of fun activities for all ages. Stop by at different times throughout the weekend to take part in different contests or watch the various events. Throughout the days you’ll find pie-eating contests, a Blueberry creation contest, a Blueberry 5K Fun Run, and a sidewalk sale.  

Galway Days Irish Festival 2019

When: August 10th, 2019 from 11 am – 6 pm
Where: Alaska Pacific University (4101 University Drive, Anchorage, AK)
Cost: $5/ person

Immerse yourself in rich Irish culture at the Galway Days Irish Festival. This day will feature entertainment, dance and music performances, food, crafts, and activities for children. If you have an interest in learning more about culture, you can take one of the workshops or explore the cultural heritage booths.

thread's 13th Annual Book Party in the Park

When: August 8th, 2019 from 4 pm – 7 pm
Where: Mt. View Garden Art Park (3350 Commercial Drive, Anchorage, AK)
Cost: Free

Kick of the back to school season with this celebration of early learning and reading. This family event brings live music, food, games, giveaways, and story time together to create one fun evening. It’ll start with a performance by Alaska Native drum and dance group Acilquq, and will continue with various activities for different age groups. All Anchorage School District incoming kindergarteners can receive free T-shirts, and everybody can enjoy the school bus tours, crafts, and free books to take home!

Anchorage RunFest

When: August 17th – 18th, 2019
Where: Delaney Park Strip (10 Ave. & H St. Anchorage, AK)
Cost: Race entry fees start at $15

There’s a race for every skill level at this two-day event. Competitors can choose from a full marathon, half marathon, 49K, 5K, and Anchorage mile. For kids, they also offer a special 2K race. Racers can also enjoy a special movie night of trail and running films, and pasta feed featuring speakers like Jeff Galloway, Marko Cheseto, and Bart Yasso.

Alaska State Fair

When: August 22nd – September 2nd, 2019
Where: Alaska State Fairgrounds (2075 Glenn Hwy, Palmer, AK)
Cost: Daily admission starting at $11

There’s so much going on at the Alaska State Fair; you’ll need a few days to cover it all. This 12-day event features carnival rides and games, livestock exhibits, giant pumpkins and vegetables, countless concerts and other entertainment, and delicious food. You’ll also find a variety of exciting contests—a Duct Tape contest, beard contest, fiddle contest, pie-eating contest, and staff goat milking competition—that are sure to be a blast.

Eagle River Challenge Race

When: August 10th, 2019 at 10 am
Where: Eagle River Nature Center (32750 Eagle River Rd. Eagle River, AK)
Cost: $35 entry fee

The Eagle River 5K and 10K are fun wilderness races for anybody who enjoys running. The route follows the Dew Mound Trail and the Crow Pass Trail. Racers will be provided with snacks, drinks, prizes, and pizza and salad from Papa Murphy’s Pizza.


Tanana Valley State Fair

When: August 2nd - 11th, 2019
Where: Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds (1800 College Road, Fairbanks, AK)
Cost: $10/ adult, $5/child (6-16) and senior (over 60)

Enjoy games, rides, livestock, a rodeo, exhibits, and fireworks at the Tanana Valley State Fair. There are endless sources of entertainment at this event, with live performances and competitive events, guests will always have something new to see.

Fairbanks Arts 4th Community Arts & Crafts Rummage Sale

When: August 11th, 2019
Where: AK Centennial Center for the Arts Exhibit Hall (Pioneer Park, 2300 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK)
Cost: Free

Have unused craft materials lying around the house? Join neighbors and friends at the Community Arts & Crafts Rummage sale to sell these items and browse other supplies you might want. If you’re a crafter, this is a great way to prepare for all the coming winter projects.


Kenai Peninsula Fair

When: August 16th – 18th, 2019
Where: Kenai Peninsula State Fairgrounds (16200 Sterling Hwy. Ninilchik, AK)
Cost: $5-$35

Enjoy the biggest celebration on the Kenai Peninsula as people from across the state unite to watch pig races, rodeos with bull riding, live music, an annual parade, and the Backwood Girl competition. The “Biggest Little Fair in Alaska” also features rides and a variety of vendors selling everything from crafts to food.


When: August 2nd – 4th, 2019
Where: Kenai Peninsula State Fairgrounds (16200 Sterling Hwy. Ninilchik, AK)
Cost: $165 for 3-day adult pass

The three-day Salmonfest is where fish and music come together. Join family and friends in this exciting festival featuring artists like Jason Mraz, Ani DiFranco, and WookieFoot. Of course, guests will also enjoy food from Alaska’s best vendors. You’ll find salmon, barbecue, and Thai food, among a variety of other treats.
